The Marine Merchant Fleet of the Republic of Panama was created by means of enactment of Law 8 of 1925 and since then has been one of the most prominent open registrations of the world. Panama has maintained its international status due to the different benefits it offers to the worldwide maritime community.

Under our legislation, any natural or legal person irrespective of his or her nationality, is eligible to register a ship under Panamanian flag. There are no minimum tonnage requisites. However, ships with more than twenty (20) years of construction must undergo an inspection in order to obtain a permanent Navigation Registration.
